Six Years

Guys, fitnessandfroyo became a thing SIX years ago. I had just started my sophomore year of college, and I distinctly remember sitting at the front desk of Scottish Rite Dormitory, working my two-and-a-half hour weekend shift when I decided to stop thinking about starting a blog and just do the dang thing.

If you guys know me at all, or at least have been reading this blog for any number of years, you know that fitness is my thing. Or, at least it’s one of my things. I’m extremely passionate about living an active and healthy lifestyle, and after consuming a number of healthy living blogs, I decided to start my own as a way to share my passion with the four total readers I probably had when this blog made its way out into the Interwebs. Actually, fitnessandfroyo started out as a way for me to share workouts and recipes, and occasionally an update on the life of a college student living in Austin. Well, it has since transformed into more of a record of my life – and this blog has seen me through college and my college graduation, adventures abroad, living with nine girls, the beginning (and end) of a long-term relationship, the start of my career (adulting, am I right?), three volleyball seasons, a number of half marathons, my first full marathon, the sweetest puppy addition, life in Austin, life in Houston, victories, failures, and everything inbetween.

It may seem self-centered to some, and sure, I’ll give you that, but I have so enjoyed being able to look back at this seemingly transformative time in my life. It’s fun to see how I’ve changed, and also where I’ve stayed the same. And while blogging has never been number one on my priority list, and there was even a time when I thought I was done with it forever, I always seem to find my way back. Writing is often how I deal with and process major life happenings, and that’s exactly what I’m here to do.

ANYWAY, in the back of my mind I knew I wanted to post on the six-year anniversary of F&F. I missed celebrating five years because #volleyball, but I also have another reason for posting. A reason I would be very surprised to learn that you had heard nothing about: Hurricane Harvey. The storm that devastated quite a bit of our great state of Texas. And if I’m being honest, I’ve tried extremely hard to come up with the right words to express the impact this Hurricane has had, but I can’t. I’ll try my best, but I’m sure I’ll leave much to be desired.

I’m going to go ahead and assume that you have seen at least some coverage of Hurricane Harvey. You couldn’t turn on the television without seeing coverage, and you certainly couldn’t check social media without getting the latest update. I think I’ve stared at my phone more in the last week than I ever have, but social media was so incredibly helpful in keeping up-to-date with the storm. That being said, I’m not going to give you a play-by-play.

I will tell you that I initially brushed off the first mention of the storm when I was walking into a district training at an alternate campus. I was walking in with a teacher from Westbury High School, and we were talking about how ready we were for students to be back on campus. He then said something along the lines of, “Well, I doubt we’ll even have school on Monday.” To which I responded, “What?” And he proceeded to tell me about this storm that was brewing in the gulf. I didn’t think much of it, because typically when we make a big deal about the weather, nothing really happens. My dad later texted me and told me to make sure I didn’t park my car on my street this weekend, as we were supposed to experience some flooding. Later that night I was texting with a few friends and they convinced me to rush out of my apartment at 10:30pm (Yes, me, out of my apartment at 10:30pm. That’s when you know it’s real.) to the nearest grocery store to stock up on food and water for this storm. We didn’t yet know it was a hurricane.

Well, Harvey started picking up speed, going from a tropical storm to a category 4 hurricane seemingly overnight. The first day of school was canceled (okay, postponed), my volleyball tournament and all regular season games were canceled until what we originally thought would be Tuesday, and all HISD employees were forced out of the building by 10:30am Friday morning.

Well, the rain really picked up Saturday evening, and then it didn’t stop for the next four days. FOUR DAYS. Catastrophic flooding. 51.88 inches. More than 20 TRILLION gallons. 185,000 damaged or destroyed homes. And I could go on and on and on. The numbers are staggering. But I don’t want to talk about that. You have likely seen the stats, and you likely know that the country has never seen quite anything like this before.

I truly don’t have words for the devastation I have now seen firsthand. I feel a little bit guilty that my apartment was almost like nothing ever happened. Safe, dry, and I never even lost water or electricity. Other parts of my neighborhood weren’t quite as lucky, nor were my parents, but I honestly don’t think you could drive through any part of Houston without seeing remnants of the destruction Harvey brought. Homes, businesses, schools. Some homes are total losses, some schools and businesses are closed indefinitely, and many are facing months and months of repair. Neighborhoods that had never experienced flooding were underwater. Bayous were overflowing right and left and you simply couldn’t get anywhere in this city unless it was by boat. In fact, boats became the most common mode of transportation for a few days. My dad thinks it will take at least ten years for this city to go back to its pre-Harvey state, and I don’t doubt it.

My favorite running path
But what I think has been the most incredible thing of all – if anything positive has come out of this tragedy – is seeing the way people have come together to help, serve, and love one another. Seriously. I don’t think this country has ever faced more turmoil than it has in the last year or so – at least in my 25 years. Tensions were high, comments were nasty, and it seems as though we were more divided than ever. I say “were” because I really don’t think it’s like that anymore. Before the rain ever stopped, people were out there weathering the storm. Saving family members, neighbors, pets, complete strangers. Our first responders worked around the clock without so much as a break or a complaint.

Volunteers at some of the major shelters were TURNED AWAY because there are more than enough, which just speaks volumes to the spirit of this city. Donations have been pouring in from all over the country.

You can’t drive down a street in this city without seeing large groups of people helping friends and neighbors carry out furniture or tear out drywall. Meals are being cooked and delivered. Laundry is being done. And the best part of it all is that there’s no “us” or “them” here. We’re ALL in it together – regardless of race, religion, or political status. Houston is the most ethnically diverse city in this country, and we have shown solidarity through it all.

My heart broke multiple times seeing what weather was able to do to my beloved city, but my heart also swelled knowing that I get to share this city with such incredible people who are more than willing to go the extra mile. My faith in humanity has been restored, and though Houston is down, we’re definitely not out. In fact, I think there’s more reason to have hope than there ever has been before.

We’ve got a L O N G road ahead of us in terms of recovery and rebuilding. It’s definitely going to be a marathon, not a sprint. But there’s not a doubt in my mind that we will rebuild even stronger than before. And while we’re at it, we’ll show the rest of the country how it’s done. I won’t lie and say that I’m not nervous to stand in front of my newest crop of students (hopefully) next week, many of whom have experienced three rounds of this devastation in three years. Quite a few of them had some sort of damage to their homes, and some of them lost everything. I don't know the right words to say. It’s going to take time, care, empathy, patience, gentleness, warmth, routine, positivity, and a whole lot more as we move forward from here. But the sun has shown its face and I have so much hope as we all move forward together.

Whew! If you’ve made it this far, I salute you. And though I absolutely CRINGE at the thought of anyone reading My First Post, I have to reward you with the post that started it all. Unsurprisingly, not much has changed. I do, however, prefer football to baseball (but no one even mention the latest Longhorn loss), volleyball is obviously still a part of my life (coaching and a little bit of playing!),

and while I may not be working at Stratford, I’m doing exactly what I thought I would be doing, precisely where I’m supposed to be. I’m still running, tardiness will always be my biggest pet peeve, and I’m watching Harry Potter as I type this post.

And if you are still reading, and feel compelled to give to one of the MANY relief efforts out there, here are a few that I personally would recommend:

This list is just a few of the plethora of ways to help our beloved city, and I’m sure many of you have already helped in some way, shape, or form. But like I said earlier, this is a marathon, not a sprint, and it’s going to require a lot more than just a week or two of volunteering and giving. Much love to you ALL! Thanks for reading this little blog of mine. Your sweet feedback truly means the world to me.

Sunday Ten

Happy Sunday! SEVEN DAYS until the Aramco Houston Half Marathon! I've been seriously training for this thing since late July, so I am more than ready to see if what I have been working for can come to fruition. I'm also more than ready for this week of all easy runs. Maybe I'll even sneak in another post or two. Probably not, as my school to-do list seems to keep on growing, but you never know.

But first, a survey!

1. How has blogging impacted you and your life?
I have always loved writing. I remember sitting down with my family’s ancient laptop at a very young age and writing stories based on characters from books or television shows that I was currently reading or watching. The one I remember most vividly is a Christmas story featuring the infamous Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen.  Anyway, I’ve always loved writing, and I have a passion for fitness and healthy living that I wanted to share with others. And I really enjoyed reading various healthy living blogs, so I figured the next step was to start my own. And this blog has shifted from its healthy living focus to a blog about my everyday adventures. Some may find that self-centered, but it has forced me to sit down and reflect on each season of my life. And I know I’ll be really grateful for that down the road.

2. What’s the favorite post you’ve written?
That is TOUGH! Not to toot my own horn, but I’ve written some pretty good posts over the years. And I’ve got a good one in the works for my 25th birthday, but we’re not quite there yet. Anyway, here are a couple of my favorite posts –
Okay, that was more than a couple. I stopped myself from picking anything posted prior to 2015.

3. How do you find time to juggle it all, blogging, working, having a social life?
Ha, well, I haven’t quite figured it out yet! As you guys have clearly experienced, blogging is the first thing to go when my life gets busy. And I wish that wasn’t the case, but if I’ve got a stack of papers to grade, they’re going to win over sitting down to write a blog post. Same with my Thursday tempo runs. And as little time as I’ve got to hang out with my friends, that will nine times out of ten beat out fitnessandfroyo. I’ve learned that you can’t possibly do it all and maintain your sanity. So when I’ve got time to blog, I blog. And when I've got something to blog about, I blog. I don’t let it stress me out, rather, I hope it’s always something of a stress reliever.

When your desk looks like this, you're not blogging
4. What is something special you do to treat yourself?
A pedicure or a massage. T-one week until I can get that post-half marathon pedicure and my feet are PUMPED.

5. Do you take spontaneous trips or are you more of a planner?
I am such a planner. I may book a flight spur-of-the-moment (read: last Saturday), but it will be for some time in the future. And while I may not plan each day down to the minute – I certainly don’t have a day-by-day itinerary, I do have a list of things that I want to do, and I try and plan it so that I am making the most of my time and doing things that are in the same area on the same day. And as many times as people told me that I could “get a hostel the day of” in Argentina, I definitely didn’t leave that to chance. So, long story short, my type A personality totally makes me a planner.

6. Where was your last trip to?
Argentina – Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Bariloche, and Iguazu Falls. And now that I think about it, I still need to finish up the recaps from those last three cities. Whoops!

7. Where is your dream vacation destination?
This is a pretty tough question, because there are so many places on my to-travel list. I would really love to go to Peru, Greece, Ireland and Scotland, Switzerland, Italy – everywhere! I am going somewhere new in 2017, though, so stay tuned for that!

8. Weirdest fact about you?
I can recite close to every line in She’s the Man. It’s based on Shakespeare’s The Twelfth Night, okay?

(Source)
9. Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give to your 18-year-old self?
Oh man, oh man. Enjoy the time you have living within biking distance of your best friends. It only gets harder to maintain those relationships along with everything else going on – work, marriage, babies (yikes!), and moving to other cities, among other things.

10. Are you a light packer or a I-should-take-everything-just-in-case type of gal?
Oh lord, there’s no question about it. I’m such a “I-should-take-everything-just-in-case” kinda traveler. Which I hate, because inevitably I come home and half of the stuff in my suitcase hasn’t even been touched. Why on earth would I bring heels with me to Buenos Aires? Just in case, she said. And I always think I’m packing light, but then I look around me and realize that I’ve once again suffered from a case of overpacking.

Adios! I've got a million things to do, and not nearly enough hours to do them. Catch y'all this week!

Game of Fives

Happy Survey Sunday! Survey Sunday is easily one of my favorite weekly fitnessandfroyo traditions, as hard as it can be to find new surveys each week. But I found this one through a quick search of Julie's blog, and I couldn't help but give it a go.

Enjoy, and may you learn something new about the girl behind the blog.

Five Places I’m Dying to Visit
  • Alaska – Ever since I saw The Proposal, I’m eagerly anticipating a trip to a state where summertime daylight rarely ends.
  • Italy – I’ve got some Italian in me, and everything I’ve seen and read about Italy just seems so picturesque.
(Source)
  • Peru – Machu Picchu is calling my name.
  • Pacific Northwest – When I’m 25 and can rent a car, I would love to spend a few weeks driving through Yosemite, up through Oregon and Washington, and over to Montana and Idaho.
  • Chile – My trip to Argentina developed a love in me for all things South America. My uncle has spent some time in the country, and everything I’ve heard of it has been nothing short of amazing.
Five Foods I Eat Every Day
  • Eggs, or egg whites
  • Chocolate
  • Cooked oats
  • Pickles (seriously)
  • Yogurt

Five Talents I Wish I Had
  • Calligraphy - Perhaps I can find a class to take?
  • Dancing
My attempt at learning to tango
  • Singing, or anything musical
  • Photography
  • Tennis (more on this to come)
I may not have many tennis skills, but I've got the tennis skirt down
Five Healthy Food Bloggers I Wish Would Cook For Me Every Day
Five Instagram Accounts I Love
Five Things I Wear (Almost) Every Day
  • Tennis shoes
The only shoes I wore in Argentina
  • Shark Watch – I’ve got quite the impressive watch tan line. While I usually trade in the sports watch in favor of a more … “professional” watch that I wear to school, I don’t think I took this watch off one time while in Argentina. It was a permanent fixture.
Five Songs I Listen To On Repeat
Five Beauty Products I Use Every Day
  • EOS Lip Balm – I put this stuff on obsessively. And it comes in so many fun flavors. All of which I have probably tried.
  • Dermablend Powder – Smooth coverage, definitely not cakey, and gets the job done.
  • Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser – Okay, I might be guilty of skipping a day or two or three here and there, but this random find is my favorite of any face wash I’ve ever tried.
But this face mask was fun to do
  • Benefit They’re Real! Mascara – Mascara and eyeshadow is about as much make-up as I will apply on a regular basis, and now that I’ve tried this particular product, there’s no going back to drugstore mascara.
  • Marc Jacobs' "Daisy" Perfume - A sweet-smelling fragrance that works for any occasion.
Five Movies I Can Watch On Repeat
  • Harry Potter (All you have to do is say “marathon weekend” and I know what my weekend plans are.)
  • She’s the Man
  • Mean Girls
  • Remember the Titans
  • The Breakfast Club
Five Books On My Current Reading List
And I'll do all of my reading here, thanks
Five Random Things I Ate Yesterday
And with that, I'm off to get in my final long run before next weekend's trail race. My first, and I'm starting with 13 miles in the middle of a Texas July. Call me crazy, and be on the lookout for a recipe post (or two!) as well as a product review coming in the very near future.

Favorite 15 in 2015

W O W, I cannot believe that 2015 is really coming to an end. It seems like just yesterday I was drinking champagne and ringing in the new year with two of my closest friends, dreading all of the 2014's I was sure to write on too many papers. And here we are, at the end of yet another year. A GREAT year, if I do say so myself. It started off a little bit rocky - having just gotten out of a long-term relationship, feeling extreme anxiety over returning to work - but I think 2015 ended up being one of my favorite years yet. And one of my favorite things about writing a blog has to be the ability to look back on my posts throughout the year. And looking back on posts from previous years. Does reminiscing on my nearly two-month stay in Barcelona ever really get old?

No, it doesn't. So, I decided to do something a little bit different to wrap up this year, by compiling a list of my 15 favorite posts of 2015. Does that make me a little self-centered? Maybe. But I had a little too much fun reading through my writing, and I know I'll love having all of them in one place.

Vulnerability
  • This one touches on the pros and cons of social media, and how social media tends to only tell half the story. This one is a post that I couldn't even proofread for fear I would lose my confidence to hit "publish," but it's one of my favorites to reread today.

National Eating Disorders Awareness Week
  • It's no secret that I love fitness and healthy eating. But what is a secret is that I occasionally take it too far. While I by no means have an eating disorder, I also have to frequently remind myself that I am so much more than my body and my fitness level.
Being ruled by food is not part of that great story
Why I Run
  • It's also no secret that I love to run, but there are so many benefits to running that go further than just staying in shape.

Six Months, Six Lessons
  • This one was a fun one to write. I wrote this in my sixth month of working (as if I had all of the answers). But it's really cool for me to see where I was when I started - independent to a fault, afraid of failing, and a million other things - and to see how far I've come. And how far I still have to go.

Conquering Fears
  • I love this post. Because never did I ever think I would spend an hour under water. The thought of scuba diving absolutely terrified me, but with the help of a dear friend and some really dynamite instructors, I conquered a forever fear. And I can't wait for my next dive.

The Blog
  • Survey Sunday is probably the most consistent part of my blogging week, but even that falls down the wayside sometimes. But I love that weekly feature, and I loved sitting back and reflecting on how much this blog means to me, and how much this blog has grown - not only as a page on the World Wide Web, but how much it has grown me.

At First, But Now
  • What a shift in perspective and attitude. I'll be 100% honest - last fall, I hated my job. Okay, hated might be too strong of a word, but I'm not exaggerating when I say that I would pray for traffic on the Westpark Tollway in the morning (and those of you who know me well, know that I hate sitting in traffic). And I'm not sure it was the actual job that I felt uneasy about, rather, the thought of working at all. My whole life I'd been a student, in complete control of my success. And I was good at what I did. Suddenly, I was thrown into a whole new role. And there was a learning curve, and I didn't quite know how to handle it. But now, I'm grateful, and I no longer pray for traffic. I thank God for a job that brings me joy, happiness, and endless entertainment.

The Perfect Break, Part Two
  • Breaking in the GoPro with this post - days two and three in San Francisco with the best friends a girl could ask for. It was a long-long weekend for this worn-down teacher, who desperately needed a break after the pressure of the STAAR test. And it was a great-great weekend full of sunshine, ice cream, wine, bikes, and sunsets on the beach.

Bellaire Diaries
  • I think this one has to be my most favorite post of all. I had way too much fun writing about my first year of teaching. I thought the Bellaire gods were against me when my classroom was taken away from me, but I'm so glad it was. I continue to be thankful that I've got the best job in the world, and I certainly enjoy adding to the #BellaireDiaries tale. You just never know when your classroom is going to be 90 degrees and rising.

New York City: My Experience
  • Though it was not my first trip to the Big Apple, it was my first real trip to this incredible, one-of-a-kind city. I traveled solo, and loved every minute of it. The food, the tourist attractions, the walkability level. Though I could never call this city home, I would go back and visit in a heartbeat. I LOVEd it.

Sorry, I Can't; I Have Volleyball
  • Volleyball has forever been, and will forever be, my favorite sport. I have such fond memories from my time spent on the volleyball court, and I am quickly making even fonder memories as a coach. However, the volleyball hole is real. During volleyball season, I frequently find myself saying no. Either because I actually have a volleyball conflict, or because I don't have a volleyball conflict, but I just need one night to myself. Though most of the time it's because of volleyball. But I've learned that it's okay to say no every once in a while.

Monday Motivation: School Edition
  • This one came as a result of a failed Things I'm Loving Friday post (yeah, it's been a while, hasn't it?), and on the first day of school, no less. Actually, I hadn't reread this one until compiling this post, and I'm really glad I did. What a sweet reminder to carry into this new year. There are going to be hard days - I'm going to fail, I'm going to make mistakes, and I'm going to embarrass myself. And that's okay. Because there are going to be even more better days. And that's what makes getting out of bed at such an ungodly hour worth it.

This I Believe
  • This one kind of goes along with vulnerability. I absolutely love hearing other people's stories. I love learning what makes them who they are, what defining moments that person has had, and just what makes each person tick. So I love this essay that we assign to our students as the first essay of the year. It doesn't do much in the way of expository, but I love learning a little bit about my students. And as a model, I wrote my own, and I shared it with them. It wasn't easy for me, but as it turns out, they love learning about their teacher just as much as their teacher loves learning about them.

Thankful
  • Thanksgiving is my hands-down favorite holiday, and I love any excuse I get to write down what it is I am thankful for. I should do it more often than I do, but Thanksgiving always gives me the opportunity to slow down, reflect, and just be thankful. I've got a little something up my sleeve in the form of a New Year's Resolution, but we'll get to that one in a couple of days.
Thankful for roommate reunions
Love Life List
  • This one is my most recent favorite post, but I think I am going to make it a monthly feature here on fitness & fro-yo. It was an easy and refreshing list to write - I simply numbered my paper (or my Word document) 1 to 25, and wrote down 25 things that I love about life right now. Big and small, there are lots of things to love about this one life we've been given.
Two loves: Mack and my horns
Well, that was a fun post to compile. Look for a typical New Year's Resolutions post to come in the next day or two, but until then, I'm off to cross the next thing off my list. Adios!
